Did you know that two sugar substitutes can induce Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism, and quitting them can lead to a remission of Hashimoto’s and normalized thyroid function? Studies have linked sugar substitutes like aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal) and sucralose (Splenda) to triggering Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism. In fact, research by Dr. Isaac Sachmechi at Mount Sinai even found that quitting artificial sweeteners led to complete remission of Hashimoto’s in two patients! Ironically enough, the entrance exam I took to get into pharmacy school had me review scientific research on the toxicity of artificial sweeteners, and so I always wondered why they were actually legal! If you’ve been using artificial sweeteners and struggling with thyroid issues, this might be worth exploring. Have you noticed changes in your thyroid health after cutting out artificial sweeteners?
