The official report: he was speeding and ran into the back of a semitrailer. A small news item. Linda Ives saw it and attached no significance to it. Almost no one did. But Coney was connected to the case in two ways: he was a grand jury witness, and his cousin Michael Coney was reportedly one of the last people to see Kevin and Don alive the night they died. After Keith McKaskle was murdered months later, people went back and looked at Coney’s “accident” again — and a darker story emerged. The whisper, which authorities didn’t dispute, was that Coney had been chased, swerving into the truck while fleeing an attack. People who saw his body reportedly said his throat had been slashed. Even prosecutor Richard Garrett eventually conceded that “the possibility that Keith Coney was being chased is looking more suspicious.” A caution, in the spirit of this project: Coney was, by many accounts, a genuinely dangerous man, and the chase and the slashed throat were what witnesses said — never proven. Officially, it’s still an accident. But a grand jury witness, tied to the last people who saw the boys alive, dying weeks into the investigation — and no one noticing until a second man was murdered — that’s how this next chapter begins.
