🌿 Why I LOVE small world play… What looks like your child simply playing with animals, people, cars or a little farm is actually a brilliant opportunity for learning. Small world play supports so many areas of development: 🗣️ Language & communication – children create conversations, learn new vocabulary and practise expressing ideas. 📖 Storytelling & early literacy – creating characters and stories helps children develop narrative skills, sequencing and comprehension. 🧠 Problem-solving & critical thinking – “What happens if…?” encourages children to think, predict and find solutions. 🎭 Imagination & creativity – children can create their own worlds, characters and scenarios. 🤝 Social skills – playing alongside or with others develops cooperation, turn-taking and communication. ✍️ Early writing – once children have created a story, you can encourage them to draw it, label their world or eventually write about what happened. 🔢 Maths opportunities – count the animals, compare sizes, sort objects, make patterns or explore positional language such as under, next to, behind and between. The best part? You don’t need to direct the play. Set up an inviting small world, step back and follow your child’s ideas. Add vocabulary, ask the occasional open-ended question and let their imagination take the lead. This is exactly why I love play-based learning at Nurturing Environments. ❤️ Learning doesn’t always look like learning. Sometimes, it looks like play. Save this for your next small world setup and follow @nurturing_environments for more simple, educational activities for young children. #LearningThroughPlay #EarlyYears #PlayBasedLearning #HomeLearning #Parenting
