I need to be clear about something before we start this series: dyslexia identification is not about one sign. It’s not about looking at your child’s reading speed and deciding that’s the whole story. You have to look at the entire learning profile, the whole picture of how your child processes written language. So here’s what we’re doing: I’m breaking down the learning profile of this 8 year old who was recently diagnosed with ADHD and is suspected of dyslexia. We’re going to look at each piece, one at a time, and I’m going to tell you what it actually means. Because bright kids mask. Fast readers can still be dyslexic. And one red flag doesn’t equal a diagnosis, but it also doesn’t mean nothing. This is part 1. We’re looking at reading speed and what’s actually happening underneath. If you’re wondering if your child has dyslexia, if you’re trying to figure out if the struggles you’re seeing are developmental or if they warrant further assessment, this series is for you. Dyslexia identification requires looking at the whole child: phonological awareness, decoding skills, spelling patterns, letter reversals (age appropriate), nonsense word reading, and so much more. Not just one thing.
