"Windows, Linux, or macOS Choosing the Right OS for Serious Embedded Systems Development" Choosing an operating system for embedded development sounds like a simple workstation decision. Windows, Linux, or macOS? Ask three embedded engineers and you may get three confident answers. One will tell you Linux is the obvious choice because embedded development is fundamentally a Unix-oriented discipline. Another will argue that Windows is the only practical engineering workstation because semiconductor vendors, PCB tools, FPGA suites, programmers, and laboratory equipment frequently target it first. A third may have spent years developing firmware successfully from a Mac and see little reason to use anything else. All three can be correct. The mistake is treating the question as if there were a universally "best" operating system for embedded systems. There isn't. The correct question is: Which host operating system creates the fewest constraints across the complete engineering lifecycle of the products I actually develop?
