@Markus Union contracts don’t include managers not being able to manage their staff. Managers can coach their staff and ask questions. This includes topics like break times that are longer or more frequent than policy or law. Unions want consistency with policy application. Allowing some staff to not start working for 30 min after they clock in and not others isn’t consistent (unless there is an disability accommodation). Managers can also partner with HR at anytime. This doesn’t mean unions don’t improve many conditions for employees. However, don’t kid yourself into believing that unions will lead to employees being able to commit time theft. Time theft is being clocked in/being expected to be working and not working. Also, the most pro-employee stance to have is that managers notice these more frequent or longer breaks and provide information on FMLA, ADA, PWFA, or other laws that may apply. This helps employees. I hear from people daily who don’t know what these are. I want managers telling staff about these.
