Aya Takano’s world drifts between dream and day. Her characters are pale, wide-eyed, and floating never quite touching the ground. They feel suspended, caught between adolescence and something more cosmic. Though she started as Takashi Murakami’s assistant and emerged from the Superflat movement, Takano took a different path. Where Murakami turned culture into symbols, Takano turned inward blending science fiction, diary-like intimacy, and soft sexuality into her work. Raised in Saitama on manga, sci-fi novels, and space encyclopedias, her paintings imagine a world where growing up never quite happens. Time loops, bodies stretch, and nothing ever fully settles.
