When your child refuses dinner, it can feel like you have to persuade, negotiate, or prepare something else just to keep the meal moving. Here's what to do instead. Serve one meal. Say: "This is dinner. You can choose what you want from your plate." Give dinner a clear window. Set a timer for 15 to 25 minutes. Keep the meal available during that time and continue with dinner as planned. If your child throws food or keeps leaving the table, end their participation in the meal. When the timer goes off, end dinner and clear the table. Serve food again at the next planned meal or snack. Now your child learns how dinner works. You decide what is served. They decide what they eat from what is available. The meal has a clear beginning and end. If you want a clear system for mealtimes, get the Parenting OS.
