Cycle school day 22- Plan B 101: Plan B (levonorgestrel) = emergency contraception that works by delaying ovulation. It’s a high dose of progestin (a synthetic form of progesterone) that tricks your body into thinking ovulation already happened, so your brain doesn’t trigger the release of an egg. But here’s the catch… timing is everything. 🕰️If you haven’t ovulated yet → Plan B can work by stopping the egg from being released. No egg = no fertilization = no pregnancy. 🥚If you’ve already ovulated → Plan B does nothing. It won’t stop sperm from fertilizing an egg and it doesn’t prevent implantation. In this case, the copper IUD (Paragard) is a better option for emergency contraception. Plan B works so much better when you are body literate (aka: know when you are ovulating Knowing where you are in your cycle = knowing if Plan B will actually work. Tracking ovulation helps you: 🪟Know if you’re in your fertile window 👀See if you’re close to ovulation 😮💨 Confirm if ovulation has already passed (aka you’re in your infertile luteal phase) P.s: plan b may also be less effective if you weigh 165 pounds or more
