On July 22, 2018, 18-year-old Nia Wilson was returning home with her sisters when they exited a BART train at MacArthur Station in Oakland, California. A man later identified as John Lee Cowell attacked the sisters with a knife, fatally stabbing Nia and seriously wounding her sister, Letifah. Cowell was arrested the following day after a BART rider recognized him and alerted police. In 2020, Cowell was convicted of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and the special circumstance of lying in wait. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Although the attack sparked widespread discussion about racial violence, authorities did not establish a racial motive. Cowell’s appeal was rejected in 2023.
