Volkswagen's Proactive Occupant Protection system helps prepare occupants for a crash, before it even occurs. Just before a potential collision, it can tighten the seatbelts, close the windows and sunroof, and activate the hazard lights. It reacts after detecting hard braking, swerving/emergency steering, or severe vehicle instability including oversteer or understeer. Proactive occupant protection used to be primarily for frontal or rear collisions, but recently the capability to detect side collisions such as being Tboned were added.
